The north of Malaysia shares the same Muslim rubber plantation culture as the south of Thailand, so it is not surprising to find a similar Kratom culture here. Just as in Thailand, Kratom is also banned in Malaysia. The Malay Kratom anyway seems to be inferior in many ways to the Thai Kratom. This explains why we can still observe illegal, but heavy Kratom imports from Thailand into Malaysia. There are also some differences in the use: Thailand Kratom is mostly chewed as fresh leaves, whereas Malay Kratom is preferably brewed into a tea (air ketum) and sold at roadside teashops in the remote densely forested areas of northern Malaysia. Malay Kratom however is said to be better than Thai Kratom as an analgesic and anti-pyretic - to kill pain and lower fever. Since the invention of modern malaria medicine the use of Malay Kratom for the purpose to fight fever has gone back though, so as of today also Malaysia uses Kratom mostly as a recreational drug.

All the Malay Kratom that directly comes out of Malaysia is illegal, and the production and export figures for Malay Kratom are even lower than for Thailand. Again it must be stated that Malay Kratom varieties are also planted in other countries, for example in Indonesia.
